Tequila Mockingbird

January 15th, 2009 by Devon

Since I was challenged yesterday to come through with a few more tequila-based recipes — not that there aren’t some here already — I figured I’d go with one of the best named tequila cocktails around. Why? Because it makes for good blog headlines, mostly.

Tequila Mockingbird - Recipe:

  • 1 1/2 ounces Tequila
  • 1/2 ounce Triple Sec
  • 1/2 ounce Blue Curaçao
  • 2 ounces Orange Juice
  • 1 ounce Cranberry Juice

This is one of those rare drinks where the “balance” ingredients (the juices) are also measured precisely. It’s also uncommon, in that it has juice ingredients, but you don’t mix this cocktail.

Fill your highball glass or tumbler with ice. Add tequila and triple sec, followed by orange juice and cranberry; then, lastly, the blue curaçao. Don’t shake or stir it; let it blend on its own. Garnish with a lemon wedge or a cherry, if desired.

  1. Good looking with the recipe! However I know i’m not crazy as I searched through the site and only found one other tequila recipe and ironically enough its for the “Tequila Sunrise”.

Is there a difference between Triple Sec and Cointreau? I heard triple sec was a bootleg Cointreau- any truth to that?

    Thanks!

  2. Are you sure you did a search? *cough cough* http://undergroundbartender.com/site/?s=tequila *hack cough*

In any event, you’re basically right - Triple Sec is essentially a bottom-shelf version of orange flavored liqueur. Cointreau is the mid-shelf version, and Grand Marnier is the top shelf brand. Blue Curaçao, for those wondering, is just blue-colored Triple Sec.

Recipes sometimes call for one of those four and not the other, because each one tastes different from the others.

  4. I didnt do a full “tequila” search in the “Search For” box, no. But I did search through Cocktails and didn’t find it. But that’s beside the point.

    Thanks for the recipes!
